How to Prevent Heat Stroke in Dogs
1. Ensure that any dog kept outdoors has plenty of water and shade. If the weather is unusually hot, take time to check the outdoor temperature in your pet's area. It may be too hot in some locations to leave your pet outdoors regardless of how much water and shade your pet has.2. Restrict outdoor exercise to the early morning and late evening when temperatures are cooler.
3. Carry water with you when walking your dog. Watch your pet carefully for indications that he is over-heating, such as heavy panting, loss of energy, and any obvious weakness or stumbling. If your pet begins to show signs of heat suffering, stop in a shady spot and give him some water. If symptoms don't subside, take him directly home and seek veterinary care.
4. Never, never, never leave your pet unattended in a parked car (that means never ever!). Even if you park in the shade and leave the windows open slightly, the internal temperature of your car can heat up and put your dog in fatal danger within just a few minutes.
5. Equip your car with window shades if you are planning a long car trip with your dog. Bring water and/or ice cubes along to help keep your dog hydrated and cool.

Aromatherapy For Our Faithful Friend

Please note: always consult a health practitioner or vet when considering alternative therapies. Although many of these approaches can be quite safe, you never know how a particular breed, or a dog on medication or special diet, may react. As well, dogs do have allergies and the last thing you want is to give your bestest friend something his body can't handle.
Emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, fear and love play a crucial role in every human being's life. These feelings are also an integral part of an animal's world. Aromatherapy can therefore provide immediate, profound and long lasting results to an animal's overall health and well being.
Leaving our dogs alone for a long period of time, the lack of attention, unhealthy food, abandonment, are just some of the common causes of stress in an animal. These can then lead to health problems like fatigue, excessive itching, shedding, panting and even aggression. Aromatherapy, if used properly, can actually treat these symptoms.

Even more common issues such as fleas, ticks and scratches can be addressed with the right mix of essential oils.
Here are some common problems and what you can do to treat them. Again, always consult with an expert before using any natural product.
If your dog is suffering from yeast or ear infection use either of these oils to treat it. Put these oils in a spray bottle with a base oil and swab the inside of the ear after cleansing.
Lavender — soothes the skin and relieves itching
Tea Tree — powerful antibacterial and antifungal
Bergamot — antifungal properties
Roman Chamomile — soothing and gentle, aids in healing tissue.

To repel fleas, use peppermint, citronella, lemon and clary sage essential oils. Ticks are repelled by essential oils such as Geranium, Bay, Lavender and Myrrh. 15-20 drops of these oils diluted with base oil and sprayed on your dog daily will keep the ticks and fleas away.
Mix 6 drops of lavender, 1 drop of Neroli and 4 drops of Marjoram essential oils with carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond oil. Apply on the spine and head lightly. Repeat when necessary. This blend will relieve emotional stress.
To relieve anxiety and loneliness — Blend 1 drop of Rose otto, 5 drops of cypress and marjoram essential oils with carrier oil. Apply on the spine and head lightly, repeating whenever necessary.
6 drops of lavender, 2 drops of roman chamomile and 4 drops of petitgrain essential oils mixed with carrier oil and applied to spine and head lightly reduce nervousness and hyperactivity.
Important tip: Keep in mind the dog's sensitive sense of smell when using essential oils. A dog that is besieged by the smells of blends may pace, whine, or rub his/her head on the ground. Introduce your dog to essential oils slowly and in small amounts.
Good luck!
